There’s a lot of debris floating around in space, and researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab are using supercomputers, optical sensors and other technology to track even small objects that could damage important satellites.

John Henderson, a space scientist at LLNL, explains:

“Everybody uses GPS to get from here to there. We have satellite television, we have weather reports, farmers use satellite data for monitoring crops. If you have a piece of satellite debris whacking into a satellite, in the worst case you now lose that capability. In February of 2009, that actually happened where there was an Iridium communications satellite that collided with a dead Russian Kosmos satellite and so that basically took out a $100 million dollar satellite.

There’s somewhere between 100,000 to 200,000 pieces of debris that we would like to be tracking. And so the supercomputing capabilities that we have here at Livermore are one way to keep track of that.”

I haven’t posted on here for a ~*~while~*~ so I think I’m going to type a little about a few key moments so far just to reflect a little on everything that is goOooing on

I have never been happier. I have the best people in my life, I was offered the opportunity of a lifetime, and I’ve been able to smile a lot more. I’ve never felt so happy and loved before, and honestly, I’m glad the direction life has brought me in the past few months.

That’s not to say that there hasn’t been any issues, but overcoming the obstacles that come my way only gives me a greater reward in the end. I’m ready to end my junior year of high school with a bang, and I’m ready to tackle the last year of high school. I want to get closer with my friends at school, so that we’ll still be close when we all go to college. I want to talk and bond more with the people I love. I want to succeed in my academics and graduate with no regrets.

I’m ready - ready for new memories, challenges to overcome, and goals to accomplish.

I actually started to tear up towards the end of writing this. Hope whoever reads this enjoys.

My year as a Lieutenant Governor for Division 28 West has been the most challenging and stressful, yet most memorable and rewarding year of my life. At the beginning of the year, I didn’t know what to expect: how am I supposed to lead sixteen clubs? How am I going to play the role of being a Lieutenant Governor after seeing two other Lt. Governors serve the division before I was elected? Learning how to develop my own leadership style with my own personality and character traits was one of the hardest things to do, along with trying to balance my life out with all of these other daunting tasks. Facing my challenges and fears head-on was a difficult task, but the reward was priceless. Being able to see how much the division has grown and being able to see how much I have grown and accomplished was one of the greatest sights I could have ever witnessed. Because of my term, I am now more comfortable with talking to large groups of people. I am now able to be personable with others, and I am able to inspire others through my actions and my enthusiasm. I learned how to be flexible - if a certain solution wasn’t fixing a problem, I would ask for help and ideas to try to tackle a problem differently. I’ve become happier. People have noticed that I sound happier than I was at the beginning of the year, as well as become more extroverted. I’ve learned how to work in a team, whether it be within my region, in the District Projects committee, or even just working with others on the District Board in general. All of these skills will benefit me in the future when it comes to being successful in whatever career I decide to pursue, or even trying to develop stronger and friendly relationships with all of the people I will meet for the rest of my life. It’s hard to imagine not being a Lieutenant Governor anymore - I don’t want to say goodbye after accomplishing so much. From hosting successful events with the region, to winning the spirit stick at Fall Rally, to educating the division to the best of my ability: it’s been quite the year. Sometimes throughout my term, my motivation and inspiration to serve others would falter, but knowing that the division is always there to support me no matter what allowed me to keep serving and to keep leading. I will never forget the people that I had the honor of working with this year in order to better serve my home, school, and community. If someone asked me if I regretted running for Lieutenant Governor: I would reply, “No.” Although this year was a great challenge, especially when school started, I have learned so much from just one year. I look forward to serving as a Key Club member next year. I will never forget the amazing Board Training Conferences, all of the road trips with the region, all of the people I’ve met, all of the friends I’ve made, all of the challenges that I overcame, and most importantly, the people that supported me throughout my entire journey. It’s been an honor serving as the Lieutenant Governor for Division 28 West for the 2012-2013 year.

Scientists at Minneapolis’ Orfield Labs created their own soundless room, an anechoic chamber. Their studies have found that when putting subjects within the chamber, they begin to hallucinate within 30 minutes.

With an average quiet room having a sound level of 30 decibels, the anechoic chamber’s sound level is -9 decibels. The ceiling, floor, and walls of the chamber absorb sound rather than have it bounce off as normal objects do. The chamber is so quiet that the subjects can even hear their own organs functioning.

Although extremely interesting, the experience is rather unpleasant. Not one subject has spent more than 45 minutes in the chamber alone. Leaving a person to only their thoughts, the chamber could drive them insane.

I remember talking to my closest friends about why I wanted to become a Lieutenant Governor. I remember talking about how I wanted to improve the division, and how I wanted to inspire others to serve. I remember talking about how I wanted to use this opportunity to grow as a leader, and as a person.

A year later: it still blows my mind how I was granted this opportunity. I’ve grown so much ever since last April. My term is ending in one month - I’m making the most out of it.

I always feel so disregarded whenever I attend these meetings. I feel that if I never attended one of these meetings, it would not have made any difference because it’s not like anyone takes anything I say to meaning or importance anyway.

Honestly, I feel like they cut me out of the picture. And this doesn’t even apply in just this context: I feel like I’ve become so distant from my friends that I’m not really included in anything of caliber in my school, which is honestly why if I do transfer schools, I think I’d be able to get over it quickly considering I don’t have much left for me here.

Not much to give anymore - well, at least no one to take it.
